Testing Out the RV Lifestyle
If you are thinking about investing in an RV and taking on that lifestyle, it is a good idea to try it out first. You won’t know what traveling in an RV is really like until you’ve done it yourself. An RV is a big investment, and since you will be spending a lot of time in it, you want to make sure that you purchase the right type. Here are 5 things to consider when testing out the RV lifestyle.
Is the RV Lifestyle Right for You?
There are different approaches to the RV lifestyle, depending on your personal preferences. You may own an RV for occasional road trips or live out of it full-time. There are motorhomes the size of a small house or tow-behinds that are the size of one room. Determine your plans for a new RV and set your budget.
Rent an RV and Take a Road Trip
The best way to test out the RV lifestyle is to go on a trial RV trip or several. Rent an RV and live out of it for a week or so. Choose a few different destinations so you can make short trips from place to place. You’ll get used to driving the vehicle and have a better idea of what size is appropriate for your needs. If you don’t feel comfortable using the RV you rented, plan another trip to try out a different type of RV that may be a better fit.
Get an Idea of the Costs and Expectations
Determine your budget for your new RV and make a list of costs associated with it. These will include inspections, maintenance, campground fees, gas, groceries, and eating at restaurants.
If you plan on living out of your RV full-time, you can offset some costs and even make some money by taking a position as a campground host. You will park at one campground all season and have duties like checking in guests, selling firewood, and maintaining the grounds. Usually, these jobs are available at state and national parks.
Full or Part-Time RVing
Does a full-time or part-time RV lifestyle work best for you? Do you plan on selling your home? Are you retired? Even if you are still working, many facilities have WiFi. Working on the road has become common as more people are able to do their jobs remotely. Whether you will live out of your RV or just use it for trips will be a big factor when deciding what type of RV to purchase.
Motorhome or Towable Rig
One of the biggest decisions you’ll make when purchasing an RV is whether to buy a motorhome or pull-behind rig. If you already have a reliable vehicle that is capable of towing a camper, you won’t spend more money upgrading your car.
Decide how much space you need in your RV based on how many people will usually be traveling with you. Keep in mind that not everyone needs a bed inside the RV. Bring some tents for some of your crew to sleep outside.
