There are challenges to living the RV lifestyle. While you have the freedom to go almost anywhere, you’re limited with much smaller living spaces. The RV lifestyle means getting accustomed to cooking in a kitchen that is much smaller than a standard home’s kitchen. Here are some tips and tricks to help you become better at RV meal preparation.

Create More Working Space for RV Meal Preparation

You’ll need a tabletop to prepare vegetables, chop ingredients safely, and use small appliances. Many RVs are limited in the countertop space they offer. Build or purchase cutting boards that fit over the top of your stove and sink so you can use these surfaces for meal preparation.

Plan Meals in Advance

Plan your menu for the week to save space in your kitchen. Choose meals that use similar ingredients and keep staples on hand. If you grill a chicken early in the week, plan ahead and serve chicken salad sandwiches or chicken soup a few days later.

When you have a plan for meals, you won’t overspend on groceries because you’ll know just what to purchase. This will help you make the most of the limited space in your RV kitchen.

Meal Prep Outdoors

You might carry a small, portable grill with you. If not, many RV campgrounds have a grill you can use. Grilling is easy. Most grocery stores sell pre-made burger patties that are seasoned and ready to cook. Purchase a package of hot dogs and buns and you have a quick and easy meal that doesn’t require a lot of thought.

Prepare Cold Meals

Cooking uses propane and will heat up the interior of your RV. Save resources by occasionally preparing cold meals. Salads, sandwiches, and pasta salad are great choices and a good way to use up leftovers from previous meals. Breakfast cereal is quick and easy to prepare with milk or yogurt in the morning. You can also keep protein powder on hand and make smoothies with leftover fruits and vegetables.

RV Meal Preparation: Cook Extra

If rice is on the menu twice, double the recipe so you only have to cook it once. You have less prep to do later and you’ll save fuel. When chopping vegetables for an evening meal, chop more than is needed and store it for snacking later. Even minor shortcuts help you better manage in a small RV kitchen.
